Corriewood Private Clinic

Castlewellan, County Down

The original historic building was purchased by its current owners in 1983 and after a period of renovation, it opened for business as a private care home in 1984. Corriewood House was listed in 1990 as a grade B2. The house inhabits a picturesque setting in heavily wooded and densely planted grounds.
McGurk Architects’ design places the natural landscape at the heart of the scheme. The ‘L’ shaped extension to the listed building is focused around a central courtyard which offers private garden space attached to each residential unit, together with communal outdoor space and continuous views of the open parkland and the familiar rear façade of the B2 listed building.

Corriewood Private Clinic caters for many infirm dementia patients who seek a familiar routine and are assisted in doing so by the use of contrasting light and colours within their environment. The roof garden features purpose-built wheelchair accessible planters which allow patients to practice gardening; proven to be therapeutic and assist with rehabilitation.
