This year’s theme, “Empowering the Next Generation in Participatory Urban Design,” speaks to the heart of what we do at McGurk Architects. We’re passionate about designing spaces that truly serve the community—shaped by their voices, needs, and ideas.
Here are three projects where we embraced the power of community participation, inviting school children, disability access groups, local residents, and community organizations to actively engage with our design process:
- Down GAA Centre of Excellence – We worked closely with local residents, Ballykinlar GAA, the County Board and Down GAA members to create a space that fosters community spirit and supports future generations of athletes.
- Sperrin Sculptural Trail – A community-driven project that brought together local schools and artist, Thomas Dambo, to create a beautiful trail that reflects the region’s rich history and culture.
- Mid Ulster Sports Arena – Designed with input from disability access groups and local sports clubs, ensuring an inclusive, state-of-the-art facility for athletes and enthusiasts of all abilities.
By engaging with those who use these spaces daily, we ensure they are more than just buildings—they are living, breathing parts of the community. Together, we are shaping a more inclusive, sustainable future.
