Parish Centre, Magherafelt
The sale of the dilapidated St. John’s Hall on King Street, Magherafelt precipitated the local parish committee commissioning a new facility.
The building to be delivered should integrate sensitively with its immediate context and create a relationship with the church situated opposite it, a listed building of architectural and historical merit. The urban context and topography of the site created a challenge that was solved by creating a split-level, bookend building to complete the King Street terrace. The design’s traditional pitched roof form, red brick walls and zinc-clad box dormer windows blend seamlessly with the existing streetscape.
The multi-purpose parish centre includes a performing arts centre, with acoustic walls, ceiling and editing booth, recording room, reception, training rooms, seminar and office space, café and self-contained snooker club.
A pedestrian link connects the nursery school and Holy Family Primary School to the site and engenders community from the earliest ages.
