Mountain View, Castlewellan
This social housing development for Apex Housing Association at Mountain View, Castlewellan is located on a 1.36-hectare site, minutes from the centre of Castlewellan. The site is composed of 34 two, three and five bedroom homes; it will eventually house a total of 152 residents when fully complete. The development includes thirty semi-detached dwellings, a block of three terrace houses and one detached dwelling. All are storey and a half timber-framed dwellings to reflect the scale and massing of the adjoining developments.
The steeply contoured site enjoys panoramic views of the Mourne Mountains and seaside views towards Newcastle, where the Mournes meet the sea. The house types either side of the spine road (which runs parallel to the slope and divides the site on a north-westerly/south-easterly axis) are designed to maximise these aspects.
The scheme is notable in that the Architects have designed a 130m2 Complex Needs Prototype Unit for Apex. This house type future-proofs the home for residents, with a lift shaft, enhanced circulation space, first floor level hoist route and kitchen design detailed for elderly and disabled usage. Finished in render, these asymmetrically elevated dwellings’ main architectural highlight is their boxed out standing seam zinc cladded dormer window.
