Strabane, County Tyrone

Welcoming this new development, the chairman of Strabane District Council, Cllr Dan Kelly said, ‘Strabane District Council is delighted to open this bright, modern new leisure centre. This centre has undergone a £2.2 million refurbishment and will foster healthy and active living for the community in Strabane and beyond… Melvin Sports complex is poised to become the hub of healthy community life in Strabane…Melvin Sports Complex reinforces the council’s ongoing commitment to providing state of the art leisure and sporting provision for the district. In partnership with sports clubs, community organisations and schools it is hoped that the complex will become a focus for increased sports participation and excellence.’

Since 1972 Melvin Sports Complex has been an epicentre of the Strabane community. The Derry City and Strabane District council’s significant investment here underlines the positive impacts that sport, leisure activities and quality facilities can have on the physical, social and mental wellbeing of any community.  McGurk Architects’ competition winning design re-planned the existing building, revitalising underused space, adding a naturally illuminated “polycarbonate coated” four court badminton arena. This is capable of hosting international standard competitions in various sports, such as basketball, netball and volleyball in a contemporary spacious environment. The complex’s new entrance accesses off a loggia next to the site’s enhanced parking area; naturally lit corridors lead to a range of other amenity spaces and activity rooms beyond.
