Genesis Bakery, Magherafelt
McGurk Architects co-ordinated and project managed the rapid development of this local bakery chain in their hometown of Magherafelt.
Increased product demand from blue chip clients Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Tesco and the Henderson Group has demanded that the existing bakery business be overhauled and reconfigured to facilitate state of the art machinery installation, like the Italian Comas pastry shaper and depositor, Rondo scone line, and a hot plate that deposits dough balls, bakes and flips pancakes.
Phased redevelopment of the existing bakery site has included new build ingredient stores, finished product dispatch store, canteen and new product development buildings. The existing bakery reconfiguration has meant more efficient workflow, including the removal of internal structural walls, railing and chill stores installation, and the removal and replacement of the asbestos-afflicted roof racking, provision of new staff changing facilities and disabled access arrangements for an expanding staff load was also catered for. This impressive revamp including dock-leveller loading bay dispatch development and an entire mechanical and electrical plant overhaul and removal were achieved while the bakery continued to be fully operational and increase productivity.
The latest phase is a 30,000 square foot distribution hub completed in four months by Heron Brothers Ltd in November 2017. This also houses new offices and a product development wing for Genesis to continue to lead the way in UK and Ireland.
