Bunhill 2 Energy Centre, Islington
This D & B commission with Colloide Engineering Systems Ltd. on the design and build of Bunhill 2 Energy Centre for Islington Borough Council is part of the expansion of its pioneering district heating network.
Bunhill 2 connects the new energy centre to the existing Bunhill Heat and Power network providing affordable heat for 454 homes, a local school, a proposed sheltered housing block and a nursery in south Islington and has the potential to supply heat for a further 1000 homes.
The architects’ brief was to coordinate and clad the energy compound site, which contains prefabricated off-site steel containers, Transport for London’s ventilation head house and UKPN’s substation.
The design includes numerous innovative energy solutions, including an ammonia heat pump driven by heat recovery from the London Underground, natural gas CHP units, thermal store and an efficient distribution network with associated instrumentation and controls.
