TESTIMONIAL / CITATION
Ireland’s President Michael D. Higgins referred to the Architect’s successful delivery of “an innovative and inspirational visitor centre – a public space which is a worthy of homage and a rendering for today’s Ireland of James Connolly, a remarkable and enduringly important political figure, not only in Ireland but far beyond.”
ÁRAS UÍ CHONGHAILE / JAMES CONNOLLY VISITOR CENTRE
This visitor centre is a community building that delivers the legacy of James Connolly through a varied and enriched learning experience to visitors. The retrofit aims to answer a complex brief; to be protective yet welcoming, progressive yet respectful of the city’s built heritage, and all within a restricted £761K budget and completed within a 6-month construction program.
The retrofit transforms the building into a unified connected community facility with cultural, private and civic spaces including a bilingual museum, café, library, office, conference, learning and exhibition spaces.
The building has a lightness evident from the open plan spaces, enhanced by double height spaces carved into the existing building plan, creating a stacked lightwell that brings natural light and a visual connectivity across the three floors.
